1. I think the photo with the large depth of field is better. You catch all of the subject matter and it looks better overall in my opinion.
2. You would use shallow depth of field to draw attention to one particular thing in the photo that you want the audience to see.
3. In situations where you want people to see an entire location large depth of field is better. Also when you're trying to take a picture of a bunch of people for something you want everyone to be in focus.
